How to Optimize Your Shopify Collection Pages

Do you know that 75% of consumers will judge a site's credibility based on its design and user experience? For most shoppers, the most important part of a website design is that the site makes it easy for them to find what they are looking for.

Shopify Collections is one feature that improves user experience and helps shoppers navigate through an online store. You can easily create a Shopify Collection page through your Shopify Admin dashboard.

Stick around as we go through tips to help you create and optimize your Shopify Collection pages.

What is a Shopify Collection page?

In a physical clothing store, you will see that clothing items are arranged in various categories. You may see men’s clothing in one section and women's clothing in another.

A Shopify Collection page groups similar products together on an online store to help with easy navigation. As a store owner, it allows you to organize your products in categories to help customers find products they are interested in.

Ultimately, a well-optimized Shopify Collection page helps to simplify the buying process and increase conversion rate and sales.

How does a Shopify Collection page work?

A Shopify Collection page is a solution that helps to keep your store well-organized and navigable. On your store, your Shopify collection page will appear as a webpage featuring images of various products within the collection.

With a well-setup collection page, customers can filter products from that page. They can easily select the product(s) they are interested in based on certain criteria.

As an online store owner, you can easily add products to a collection with an internal link structure.

What are the Shopify Collection types?

You can create your own Shopify Collection Page in two distinct types- the manual collection and the automated collection. Before choosing a collection type, it is important to examine which will work best for you, as there is no going back once you pick a collection type.

Let's look at the two types of Shopify Collections:

Manual collection

A manual collection page includes products that you've added yourself. Once you build a manual collection page, it stays the same, no matter how many products are added to your store. To make any changes, you will need to manually add or remove products on the collection page.

In practice, maintaining a manual collection page can be more tedious, as it requires time and effort. If you're wondering if this collection type will work for you, consider the number of products you have. The manual collection page typically works best for small and carefully hand-picked products.

Automated collection

If you have thousands of products, it will be practically impossible to click through all of them to create a collection page.

Thankfully, the automated collection type makes the creation process easy. All you need to do is choose certain product conditions and have Shopify sort them out for you.

Shopify provides 60 conditions including product type, product title, weight, inventory stock, etc.

What's more, every time new products are added to your site, Shopify automatically matches products that meet these conditions.

For example, if you create a tag for summer clothing items, as more summer clothing is added to your store, they will automatically be sorted under this tag.

However, removing products from your collection isn't as easy as that. You will need to manually remove them by changing the product condition or product detail.

How to create a Shopify Collection page

Here's a simple step-by-step to create your own Shopify Collection page:

Step 1: Go to Shopify Admin Dashboard > Products > Collections and click on Create Collection.

Step 2: Add a collection title and description

Step 3: Move to the Collection type section and select your preferred type - Manual or Automated. Once you select a collection type, follow the steps to create your page and Save to finish. Keep in mind that once you create a collection type, you won't be able to change it.

Step 4: To add products to your collection, go to the Products section, browse products, add them to your collection, and Save to finish.

How to add collections to pages on Shopify

Now you've set up your collection page and want to add it to your homepage. You can do this by showcasing a featured collection or a collection list that links back to your collection page.

To add a featured collection:

  • Go to your Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes and click on Customize
  • On your theme editor, click on Homepage > Add Selection > Featured Collection. Depending on the theme you are using, you will have a limited amount of products you can list. For example, you can only list 25 products on Shopify's Debut theme. If you need to add more products using this theme, you can create as many featured collections.
  • Once you click on Featured Collection, choose Select Collection in the menu bar.
  • Lastly, select all the collections created. Add a heading and description and customize the layout for your featured collection.

To add a collection list:

  • Go to your Shopify Admin page, click on Online Store, and then Themes
  • Click on Customize and in your theme editor, select Homepage, click on Add Selection and choose Collection List
  • Next, click on the Collection block, and in the left menu bar, click on Select Collection to add a product collection.
  • Choose collections created to add to your list and click on select when done.
  • Lastly, fill in all your collection blocks. Add a header, and description, and customize your layout to finish.

To edit your collection name or featured image:

  • If you're changing an image, simply click Edit on the Collection image section, add the image, and click Save

To change your collection availability on selected sales channels:

  • Go to the availability section, click on Manage, and untick the sales channels you do not want. Once done, click on Save

To delete a collection from your store:

  • Go to Shopify Dashboard > Products > Collections and choose the collection you want to delete.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the Collection details page and click on Delete Collection. Once you delete a collection, the link to it will be permanently deleted.

How do you optimize your Shopify Collection page?

Optimizing your collection page will ensure you attract visitors to your page. You must optimize your collection page to ensure you get quality traffic that can bring in sales. Here are a few simple tips for optimizing your Shopify Collection page:

  1. Identify and add keywords to your page
  2. Optimize your Shopify collection description
  3. Optimize Shopify collection images
  4. Add product filters to your collection page
  5. Add online reviews to your collection page

Identify and add keywords to your page

Your Shopify collection page is designed to guide your visitors around your store and through to the checkout phase as quickly as possible. To do this, you need to ensure your store is well-optimized for organic search.

Start by identifying the right keywords for your page using tools like Ahrefs and Google Keyword Planner. Once you create a list of keywords relevant to your collection page, you can add them to your collection title, collection URL, and other parts of your page.

Optimize your Shopify collection description

Your Shopify Collection description can give search engines like Google the data they need to help rank your store for organic search. You can take advantage of the description section of your page to improve your ranking.

First, ensure your description includes relevant keywords and properly summarizes the page content. Keep in mind that you have a limit of about 100 words. Also, you can include links to other collection pages or texts to provide more information about your products or brand.

Optimize your Shopify collection images

Using high-quality images cannot be overemphasized. It is an important aspect of your collection page as it helps customers interact with your product, and increases their trust.

You want to use high-quality images in a high-quality format. Take your product images from various angles, and ensure they are consistent. You may want to add product videos or interactive elements like Augmented Reality (AR) to bring your page to life. Ensure your images' size and dimensions align with Shopify's image guidelines.

Add product filters to your collection page

Your customers may land on your collection page and still find it difficult to get the right product. This can cause you to lose quality leads and sales. Adding product filters to your collection page can make all the difference.

With product filters, shoppers can narrow their search right to the exact product they are looking for.

Add online reviews to your collection page

Most customers will decide on a product based on customer reviews. In fact, 49% of consumers trust reviews just as much as personal recommendations.

Ensure you add enough reviews on your collection page and product page to increase buyer trust and conversion rate.

Conclusion

Shopify Collections gives you the opportunity to put your products in the spotlight for all to see. It also increases your conversion rate and helps shoppers easily navigate your online store.
