Amazon prioritizes its customers and to protect them from harmful or fake products, it places restrictions on some categories, sub-categories, and products. These categories are called Restricted or Gated categories. 

Selling on Amazon gated categories is possible. However, you will need to put in some extra work.

What are the restricted categories on Amazon? 

Some product categories are restricted or gated. This means that to sell in them, you will need to go through Amazon's approval process for restricted categories.

The process of getting ungated differs depending on the category. Some processes may be more straightforward than others. 

Here's how to sell in some of Amazon's gated categories and products: 

Jewelry 

This category includes jewelry pieces approved and following Amazon’s Quality Assurance Standard.  

Amazon says that:

  • You must sell jewelry products as listed and described in the images and product descriptions on your listing. 
  • Jewelry products must be authentic 
  • You are not allowed to list items over $300,000
  • You must have a professional seller account 
  • You must meet performance criteria including an Order Defect rate of less than 1%, a pre-fulfillment cancellation rate of less than 2.5%, and a late shipment rate of less than 4%. 

If you're not a well-established brand, it may be difficult to sell in the Jewelry category as barriers to entry are many. 

Toys & Games

The Toys and Games include toys for children 14 and younger. The category also includes collectibles, drones, board games, etc. Amazon places restrictions on this category during the holidays. 

For this category, Amazon requires that:

  • Pre-fulfillment cancel rates should not be more than 1.75% in the month leading to the holiday season (typically around October). 
  • Your late shipment rate must not be more than 4% in the month leading up to the holiday season. 
  • Order Defect Rates should not be more than 1% as of when the holiday season starts. 
  • You must process and ship a certain number of orders months before the start of the holiday season (starting around September). 

If you want to sell in this category, it is important to meet the holiday requirements before the holiday starts. 

Entertainment collectibles 

Entertainment collectibles are products associated with television or film. These products are either a special edition, signed, or possess some unique and valuable quality. 

To sell in this category, Amazon says: 

  • You must have a professional seller account 
  • You must maintain good seller performance metrics with an Order Defect Rate of less than 1%, a Pre-fulfillment cancel rate of less than 2.5%, and a Late shipment rate of less than 4%. 
  • Your customers must be able to complete the ordering and buying process on the Amazon website. 
  • You must comply with all listing requirements 
  • To apply, you will need to send an email to collectibles-application@amazon.com as you cannot apply online. 

How to apply to get ungated on Amazon

While different categories and products have different Amazon category approval requirements, here are a few things you need to have before seeking approval: 

Good performance metrics

To get approval to sell restricted products, your performance metrics should be in good shape. Your Order Defect Rate (ODR) should be less than 1%, the pre-fulfillment cancel rate should be less than 2.5% and the late shipment rate should be less than 4%. 

A professional Amazon seller account

Before starting the Amazon ungating process, you will need a professional seller account, as most categories require one. 

The professional seller account goes at a monthly subscription cost of $39.99.

However, note that there are some exceptions. Items like Collectible Books, Collectible Coins, and Gift Cards do not require a professional seller account. 

Gather invoices for your inventory 

You want to gather copies of invoices for your inventory. These invoices should be legitimate and should match the company information on your Amazon Seller Central. These copies should also be high resolution. 

Proof of authenticity 

Amazon places restrictions to ensure the safety of its customers. To get ungated, you will need to establish your product's authenticity by proving that your support is a licensed dealer or manufacturer. 

Once you have all the necessary documents, follow these steps to apply for restricted categories on Amazon: 

  • On your Amazon Seller account, go to the Inventory tab and select Add Product.
  • Next, search for the product you want to sell
  • If it is restricted, click “Listing Limitations Apply” close to the item
  • Lastly, click on Request Approval to start the application process. Sometimes you may receive a notification saying you are not approved and applications are not being accepted. 

What happens if you do not comply with restrictions? 

Amazon takes its policies and regulations very seriously and non-compliance can come with severe consequences:

  • You could have your listing canceled 
  • Amazon could limit your listing privileges 
  • Your account could be suspended 
  • Your account could be altogether banned

If Amazon takes disciplinary actions and your account is suspended or banned, it may be difficult to get reinstated. To be on the safe side, it's best to comply with Amazon's policies. 

Is selling in Amazon-restricted categories worth it?
